SPLASHHEROES – The VILLAINS Edition – 2020 AurumLight Calendar

It is finally here!

Our new 2020 AurumLight Calendar. And for this year we have the fan-favourite series SPLASHHEROES and this time with a twist – The VILLAINS Edition!!

You can order your copy here:
http://AurumLight.com/calendar/

Thank you for your support!

It is a few years since the first set of SPLASHHEROES, so I hope you all are happy that these special woman are finally back!

.

To make this year calendar happen we have used paint and water only!
Close to 100 galons (450litres) of liquid to be exact.

The project was stretched in time – and in this case the first shoot was done in May and the last during my Splash Workshops in October 2019. All together it was 8 studio/shooting days.

This year we have 12 splashy Vilenesses, well almost twelve… Because like in the previous SplashHeroes calendar – not all ladies were heroines – so this year not all of them are evil. And I am sure you can find the ones.

There is something that fascinates me about villains… It is probably the fact that among other things they simply cause chaos and give things to do to Heroes. Without the first group there wouldn’t be a need for the second – in our case making the SplashHeroes five years ago was an action simply waiting for a reaction and it is happenning this year!

So without further adieu I present you SPLASHHEROES 2020 – The Villans – AurumLight Calendar:

The Cover

For that series we have prepared special wigs that were done by my good friend Katrina Bets who worked with me on the first SplashHeroes Series.

We worked with 6 very skilled models that also worked with us before.

The interesting point is that models are generally very patient people and used to repetitions, many takes, studio surrounding and a lot of people that runs around them. But not necessary they are familiar with a cosplay concept or even the superheroes in general. So sometimes it is tricky to get them to be emotionally invested in the actual character they portray.
On the other hand Cosplayers not always are comfortable with the modelling part of the project were you are pretty much exposed to everything and everyone.

So the goal is to find someone in between these two worlds and you are good to go!

The illustrations and the concepts required a specific props.
And for this series we had to cast a bunch of plaster skulls, build a set of horns or a crazy bat…
It was something different and fun to work on!

And when I say that our models are really good – check the January concept one more time above and now you will see that we had to threw the liquid on the models head!

So that is it!
I hope that you have enjoyed this one. We certainly did!

Even though it was a lot of work – starting from a sketch – going through the wet and long studio photo  days finishing with weeks of postrpoduction…

If you would like to have the calendar in print were you can enjoy all the illustrations in their full glory and resolution…

Last but not least!
Acknowledgements – If you look carefully you will notice many references – especially to J. Scott Campbell who is one of my favourite artist on the comic book scene! But also Artgerm and many others.
I enjoy comic books and have a lot of respect for people that make them happen. I thank them for many years of jogging my imagination!

AurumLight for Atom Compression Wear 2018 Ad Campaign

2018 is an extremely busy year for AurumLight Team so far.
Running from an assignment to assignment can be exhausting even if you love what you do…
It is still great though! well most of the times… not when you have to clean after the shoot… never then…

Today I have found some spare time to browse through the finished work and pick a few that I would like to share here on the blog in the coming weeks.

Recently we were commissioned by ATOM Compression Wear company – one of these clients that we have a great ongoing relationship.
And asked to put together a concept for their 2018 Ad Campaign.

What you have to know about ATOM is their Lanati Milk Fibre – a revolution indeed in the compression wear market.

Atom compression socks are knitted with milk fibre that have unique properties, which are naturally derived without addition of chemicals or materials which may affect sensitive skin.
Milk fibre is one of the major components of the Lanati milk yarn.

Milk fibre… now you see the connection.

So how do they make socks from the milk we drink?

“Milk Yarn is made from milk protein fibres. Firstly, the milk is de-watered, that is all the water content is taken out, and then it is skimmed. Latest bio-engineering techniques are then used to make a protein spinning fluid, and efficiencies and technology have resulted in very little water being used and very little waste products. This fluid is suitable for the wet spinning process through which the final high-grade textile fibre is made.”

If you want to more know about beneficial properties of Milk protein fibre or interested in ATOM Compression Wear please visit their website: http://www.atomcompressionwear.com .
These are really great and passionate people!

So after a couple of phone calls (That is the case in nearly 80% of the commissions, but it’s a story for a very different blog post) I sat down and drafted the proposal which was very quickly approved and we went off to the studio!

We have created a three sets of images – the first one you see above – to express the comfort and a natural soft embrace of the material that you will wear. The second one under this paragraph – with more active vibe to hint the line of the products prepared for use in sports like yoga, running, golf, tennis etc,
And the third one with Logotypes and more branding related assets – you can see a few below.

MILKY PINUPS 2018 – The SplashScreen

Hi there!

We are thrilled to let you know that the Milk Calendar 2018 is finally here!
You can order your copy here >>>
aurumlight.com/calendar2018

After four years from the release of the original Milky Pinups that were followed by the SplashHeroes, The Fallen Angels and this year Black Calendar we have decided to come back to our origins and bring you the fun stuff again.

The AurumLight Milk Calendar – MILKY PINUPS 2018 “The SplashScreen” – came to life during an intense and really energetic four shooting days.
Seven models, three makeup & hair artists and 15 people from AurumLight team made this project happen, bringing you healthy and fresh dose of every-year milky magic!

That is our fifth available-for-order calendar and after the Fallen Angels and Black – which were quite monochromatic – we decided to throw more colour and fun in the mix.
Adding the last ingredient – the movie references – and we’ve got a great recipe for this year’s series!

.

As an avid cinemagoer I had more titles in my head than I could fit in the 12 page calendar…
The selection was really hard, but finally we locked down to the ones you can see below.
Some of the titles or characters are really popular and therefore quite obvious but others have just a hint of the title. This makes them more difficult to decipher. If you don’t want to guess you can scroll down and check the reference board…

Miss January – Monika Syntycz

Miss November – Zuzanna Chyba

Miss March – Klaudia Tolloczko

Miss April – Monika Syntycz

Miss May – Dora Marble

Miss February – Anisa Shaken

Miss June – Paulina Guzinska

Miss July – Mariia Markova

Miss September – Mariia Markova

Miss October – Paulina Guzinska

Miss August – Paulina Guzinska

Miss December – Klaudia Tolloczko
.

As usual all the costumes were made out of milk – in many cases colourised by the food colourisers…
We threw on our models a lot of milk and they were amazing during this demanding process!

.

The personal projects such as this one are the best situations when trying new things. Keeping that in mind we’ve decided to build a small pool with milk and put a model in the middle.
Just when the plan was in place we were invited by our friends from IkonStudio to Oslo and used that opportunity to show the participants a real life photoshoot without any tests earlier. It was a blast and the whole event was a great fun for everyone involved.

After all these years with the liquids it might looks like it is an easy going process…
But it all comes down to your experience and how well oiled machine your studio Team is. I am fortunate to work with the best people out there that makes the work so much easier!

It is no longer a guessing-game for us. As I have said before, when you throw the milk you don’t really know what you will see on the photographs, and is it going to be a useful frame. But if you did that as many times as we did, you can enter the studio with a certain level of confidence. The right amount of liquid, the force, angle of the throw, placement and the actual tool you are using – it all matters and gives me a good idea what shape I will get from every splash.
So if I could share with you a single advice – try to go out and shoot as many times as you possibly can – at some point it will click and that’s the moment that changes everything!

I am not forgetting those who are here to check out the gear of course…
As you probably know I shoot with Nikon D800 and this time with 50mm lens. Thanks to StudioImport we also shoot with the newest PhaseOne XF system which is an excellent piece of machinery.
Regarding the lights – I use bunch of Einsteins E640 with a various modifiers and the Lastolite panels.

You can see the whole setup on our animation below:

Last but not least – The movie references!
I am a kid of 80s so those my age or older probably already picked up the right titles…
For the youngsters here is the reference sheet ;-)

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), The Addams Family (1991), Pulp Fiction (1994), Looney Tunes (1984), American Beauty (1999), Carmen Jones (1954), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Baywatch (1989), Teen Wolf (1985), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Scream (1996), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
.

I hope you enjoyed this one!
It was a great journey and we are all ready for more now.
Off to the next one!

Behind The Scenes of The Milk Workshop in Oslo, Norway

We are back from the Milk Workshop in Oslo, and what an amazing event it was!

Another meet-up in Scandinavia and you have probably noticed that we are keep coming back to the same places, or rather catching up with the same lovely people.

There are a few spots in the world that make me feel like at home and in Norway we are always hosted by the great folks at IkonStudio.

Per and his group of assistants are very much like our London crew and working with them always makes you push the envelope and make something amazing happen!

And with the support from our partners at the StudioImport, our participants could use the best gear available out there.

We had a real beast in house… in the shape of PhaseOne FX Camera + IQ3 100MPx Digital back

…and quite exciting new HENSEL CITO 500 Lights. These bad boys are really fast and I will talk about them more in the near future!

Couple of years ago at IkonStudio we did this illustration for the Splash Heroes calendar and may I add it was the only image in the calendar that was done in the workshop environment, all others were accomplished at our London studio, in the very much controlled environment.

Having all that in mind we have decided to run with the most challenging concept to date and we took participants right to the centre of commercial-scale photoshoot involving milk, a pool , models and loads of creative vibes!

Here you can see PhaseOne XF hanging 5 meters above what in a few minutes became a pool of milk…

…well, the usual day at the studio…

Participants as always could test their ambition as a Milk dress designers and after the presentation shoot, they took the main stage.

We topped the event with a day worth of a postproduction process and after over 8h of mind bending we send our photographers homes to work on their future milky projects!

I am glad everyone was happy and got home safely as some of the people travelled from a faraway places like Paris or Los Angeles! I here salute you guys!

It was great to meet old friends and make new ones, and I am sure we will be back soon!

oh, last but not least.. as an avid reader of Jo Nesbø I couldn’t missed the occasion to visit Harry Hole’s watering hole – Restaurant Schroder in Oslo!
Great food and cool people inside – totally recommending that place.

P.S. For those who are asking about potential future events – it looks like you will meet us this year in Cologne, Germany and potentially at the begging of the 2018 in Australia (and I hope) USA!

Hope to see you there!

Cheers
Jaroslav
